Maruti is renowned for launching compact hatchbacks that are not only spacious, but also provide the biggest bang for the bucks. The two popular hatchbacks from the company called Maruti Alto 800 and Alto K10 are also the top sellers of the company in recent years. Maruti Alto 800 is available in one CNG and seven petrol run trims. Maruti Alto K10 on the other hand, comes in one CNG and five petrol run trims. Price wise, Maruti Alto 800 is available in the range of Rs.2.4 Lakhs to Rs.3.5 Lakhs (Ex showroom, Delhi) as against Rs.3 Lakhs to Rs.3.8 Lakhs (Ex showroom, Delhi). The following segments compare the two hatchbacks from the stable of Maruti.
These two hatchbacks from Maruti offer good value for money for a small family. While the Maruti Alto 800 is a bit longer, Alto K10 on the other hand has slightly more width and height. Both these cars feature conventional clear lens headlamps, tail lamps, body colour bumpers and door handles. Both of them also have wheelbase and ground clearance of the same measurement. However, Alto K10 has bigger tyres, which is a plus point in its favour.
These two hatchbacks come with similar plastic and fabric upholstery, number of seats, manual air conditioners, heating, front pockets and power steering. However, Alto K10 also features front adjustable headrests, Vanity mirrors on sun visors for the co-driver and bench foldable rear seats. The Alto 800 on the other hand comes with power windows, digital clock and cigarette lighter, which are absent in the K10.
A F8D 0.8-litre 47.3bhp 9V F8D Engine power plant that has a displacement capacity of 796cc powers Maruti Alto 800. This power mill has 3 cylinders and 12 valves attached to a five speed manual gearbox, which allows it to produce a maximum power of 48 PS @ 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 69 Nm @ 3500 rpm. It gives a mileage of 28.29Kmpl on city roads and 30.46Kmpl on highways. The Alto K10 on the other hand is powered by a K10B type 1.0-litre 58.2bhp 12V K series, Petrol engine that has a displacement capacity of 998cc and houses three cylinders and twelve valves attached to a five speed manual gearbox. This engine allows it to give a maximum power of 58.2bhp @ 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 78 Nm @ 3500 RPM.
Maruti Alto 800 and Alto K10 come with several safety features. The Alto 800 has a solid disc brake for the front wheels, whereas the Alto K10 features much-improved ventilated disc brakes for the front wheels. Both of them have drum brakes for the rear wheels. They also come with three point seat belts, but only Alto K10 features child safety locks and side impact beam. The Alto 800 on the other hand comes with seat belt warning system.
According to us, Alto K10 is a better car between the two, for not only it has a more powerful engine, but also more safety features.
